A fun street snack idea that didn’t deliver

A playful snack concept with disappointing results

I stopped by Tsukidako 月だこ 本店, while walking along Tsukishima Monja Street 月島もんじゃストリート in Chuo-ku, Tokyo. I had already eaten monjayaki at another restaurant on the street, so I wasn’t very hungry. Still, this small takoyaki snack shop looked fun, so I decided to try something.

I ordered octopus rice crackers made of two pieces of takoyaki sandwiched between large rice crackers. I also picked up a taiyaki for dessert.

The idea sounded great, but the execution was disappointing.

octopus rice crackers

The takoyaki itself was fine. It was okay, nothing special. The real problem was the rice crackers. They were supposed to be crispy, but they were stale, soggy, and heavy instead. That ruined the whole snack. The fun of this dish is the contrast between crispy crackers and hot takoyaki inside. Here, that texture simply wasn’t there.

The taiyaki was another letdown. The shop had pre-made taiyaki lined up in a display, and they were not kept properly warm. Mine was only partially reheated. Instead of being piping hot, it was closer to lukewarm and partly cold.

taiyaki

I personally love fresh taiyaki when it comes out hot, with a slightly crispy exterior and soft dough with hot anko inside. This one was nothing like that.

Overall, the food felt poorly executed. The ideas were good, but the final result was disappointing.

A modern setup on Monjayaki Street

The shop itself sits on Tsukishima Monja Street, a place known for casual and lively food spots.

The ordering system felt relatively modern, with a touch-panel ticket machine. An English menu was available.

The atmosphere itself was not bad. It felt like a small snack-style street shop, and the overall environment was fine for a quick stop while walking around the area.

Decent service but poor value overall

The service was fairly standard. The staff handled the order without issues, and the process was straightforward.

Reservations were not required, and credit cards were accepted.

The prices were low, which seemed reasonable at first. However, considering the quality of the food, the visit did not feel like good value.

Even though the prices themselves were not very high, the stale rice crackers and poorly reheated taiyaki made the experience disappointing overall. The concept was fun, but the execution fell short.

Summary

A fun street snack idea that didn’t deliver 👎
Tsukidako is a small snack shop on Tsukishima Monja Street serving takoyaki snacks and taiyaki. The takoyaki between rice crackers was disappointing because the crackers were stale and soggy, and the taiyaki was only partially reheated instead of freshly hot. Despite a modern ordering system and reasonable prices, the overall food quality and value were poor.
