A lively monja stop on Tsukishima Monja Street
👍
Time of visit: May 2022
A sizzling monja experience
I visited Monja Okonomiyaki Makoto Tsukishima Store もんじゃ お好み焼き 誠 月島店 when I was looking for somewhere to have lunch along Tsukishima Monja Street 月島もんじゃストリート, which is a really fun place to be. The street was busy and full of energy, lined with many restaurants, and people everywhere seemed to be having a good time.

Among the many options, Monja Okonomiyaki Makoto looked noticeably more crowded than several nearby places, so I took that as a good sign and decided to go in.

I ordered their signature dish, the Monja Makoto special, which includes ingredients such as camembert cheese, cod roe, and pork belly. One thing I liked about this place is that you can ask the staff to cook the monjayaki for you, which is fun to watch. The staff member prepared it skillfully on the hot plate, spreading the mixture into a thin sheet of sizzling monja.

The finished monja tasted pretty good. I especially enjoyed the crunch of the cabbage and the crispy crust forming on the bottom of the monja.

That said, monjayaki in general doesn’t really feel filling to me. Before cooking, the bowl of ingredients looks like quite a lot of food, but once it’s cooked everything somehow turns into a very thin sheet, and the volume seems to disappear. Personally, I tend to think of monjayaki more like a snack rather than a full meal.
If you’re not a big eater and want something to nibble on while drinking alcohol, this style of food might work well. But if you’re hungry and looking for something that will really fill your stomach, it might not be the best choice.
Relaxed interior and friendly service
The atmosphere here was quite relaxing. The wood-toned interior and green matcha-colored seats created a calm and comfortable setting.

Service was excellent. The staff were friendly and polite, and their skillful preparation of the monjayaki added to the experience.
The Monja Makoto special I ordered cost ¥1500, which felt reasonable—not particularly cheap, but not expensive either.
There was no English menu, as the menu appeared to be available only in Japanese. Reservations were not required, and credit cards were accepted.

Overall, even though monjayaki isn’t really my type of food, visiting Monja Makoto was still a fun experience. The lively street atmosphere, friendly staff, and the chance to watch the cooking process made the visit enjoyable.
