A refined experience with excellent food but strained service
👋
Time of visit: April 2023
An authentic find near Nakano Broadway
Sakuratei さくら亭 in Nakano-ku, Tokyo, is a kaiseki restaurant we found after wandering around Nakano Broadway. The food was excellent. The saikyoyaki stood out, and the tempura was well executed, showing strong overall quality. However, slow and inattentive service made the experience feel less satisfying, especially for the price.

Traditional setting done right
The space features a traditional Japanese interior with tatami mats, shoji windows, and a neatly maintained atmosphere. A staff member in a kimono added to the authentic feel, and the setting itself left no complaints.

Service struggles under pressure
The restaurant was very busy, and the staff appeared overwhelmed throughout the meal. Dishes took a long time to arrive, and the service felt rushed and impersonal rather than attentive.
The total came to around 40,000 yen, which felt expensive given the slow service and overall experience. While the food and setting were strong, it did not feel like good value, making a return unlikely unless there are limited options nearby.

There is no English menu available. Reservations are usually required, but we were able to get in without one. Credit cards are accepted.
