A Sushi Restaurant Where the Side Dishes Shine
👍
Time of visit: September 2025
Food
I visited Tama Sushi 玉寿司 in Nakano-ku, Tokyo. Overall, the food was pretty good. Although this is a sushi restaurant, the sushi itself felt very normal. It was fine. Just nothing especially memorable.

What stood out more were the other dishes.
We loved the grilled tuna (toro). We also loved the steamed clams (hamaguri). My partner was very impressed. Those dishes left a stronger impression than the sushi. They felt more satisfying and better executed.

It seemed like the man was in charge of preparing the sushi. The woman, who appeared to be his wife, seemed to handle the cooked dishes. I guess we especially enjoyed her food.

Overall, the food felt solid but not exceptional.
Service and Atmosphere
The man and the woman running the restaurant do not speak English, and the menu is only available in Japanese. That can be inconvenient for foreign customers.

However, they were very nice people. They tried their best to communicate with foreign guests. Even without a shared language, you could see their effort. That was appreciated.
The atmosphere felt simple and comfortable. Nothing fancy. Just a straightforward local sushi restaurant.
Reservations are not required, so it is easy to visit casually.
The prices felt a little high. Considering the overall experience, the value felt average rather than exceptional.
In the end, Tama Sushi is a decent neighborhood spot. The sushi is standard, but the grilled tuna and steamed clams are the highlights.
